No More Direct Root Access in CyanogenMod 9+ Custom ROMs

If the title make you read again, then you are hearing right. There will be no more root access for CyanogenMod custom ROM power users. CyanogenMod is the deeply rooted group of underground developers which has spread over million devices. For the main reason of security, the latest changes have been made according to the CyanogenMod Blog.

However, you can access the root of the device, let me make clear here:

CyanogenMod has made the access to the root bit complicated than before. There are 3 ways to access and 1 way to disable:

  • Enabled for ADB
  • Enabled for Apps
  • Enabled for both of the above.
  • Disable for all of the above.

CyanogenMod team took first step with the first public CyanogenMod 9 alpha Custom ROMs, by disabling the root access, which was defaultly enabled in previous builds). Power users can still get the root access by executing ADB Root in terminal only in needs.

Will this change of access affect the installed device or installed root apps?

If you ever tried CyanogenMod Custom ROMs on your phones, you have already given root access to the installed applications (any!), which means those applications can perform any tasks through which data integrity and security could be compromised. By this latest change, you will get the request for access to root of your phone by the accessing apps via SuperUser.apk and the next step is your decision, whether to give access or not according to the trustworthy or reliability of the apps. Just 1 more requesting procedure you will see.

And mentioning about the remaining concerns (Unlocked bootloaders and recovery) the blog also pointed:

The bootloaders are out of our hands, there is little to nothing we can do on that front. Regarding recovery – with unlocked bootloaders, a malicious user could just flash a new recovery image (without any potential security we could apply) or just dump the data partition.

CyanogenMod already installed in more than 1 million devices, will this change fulfill the gaphole of these devices? Will all these handsets get any patches to make this changes or still have to re-install the complete ROM again?
